Complete LS Engine Rebuild and Reconditioning

Oztrack rebuilds LS1, LS2, L76, L77, L98 and LS3 engines in-house using CNC machining, precision measuring and LS-specific engine building experience.

The complete vehicle-based rebuild starts at $9,900. Use the options above to add cylinder-head upgrades, camshaft upgrades, sleeving, intake parts, valvetrain components and dyno run-in.

The original cylinder heads are cleaned in the base package, but they are not fully reconditioned unless you select one of the CNC cylinder-head options.

LS1, LS2, L76, L77, L98, LS3 and LSA Rebuilds

We rebuild 5.7L, 6.0L and 6.2L LS engines for Holden, HSV and conversion applications. The final machining and parts combination depends on bore condition, cylinder-head condition, kilometres, previous damage and how you intend to use the vehicle.

Real LS Engine Failure

Dropped Intake Valve Seat

One problem we see in higher-kilometre 6.0L and 6.2L LS engines is a dropped intake valve seat.

The original valve seat is pressed into the aluminium cylinder head. Repeated heat cycles, high kilometres or overheating can allow the seat to loosen.

If it moves far enough, the valve can remain open and be struck by the piston. Damage can extend to the valve, piston, cylinder head, connecting rod and engine block.

For higher-kilometre 6.0L and 6.2L engines, especially engines with an overheating history, we recommend CNC ported cylinder heads with new ductile-iron intake valve seats.

CNC ported rectangular-port cylinder heads with new ductile-iron intake valve seats. Exchange pricing assumes your original heads are suitable cores. Without suitable cores, the price is $3,000.

Performance Camshaft Upgrade

Upgrade from the standard cam package to a performance camshaft with dual valve springs while the engine is already apart.

We can choose the camshaft around engine size, cylinder heads, gearbox, converter, exhaust, intake, driving style and power target.

Sleeving with Melling Sleeves

+$2,600

Some LS blocks cannot be safely rebored because of excessive cylinder wear, existing damage or factory core shift.

Core shift means the original cylinder is not perfectly centred in the block casting, which can leave insufficient cylinder-wall material for safe machining.

When required, we install Melling sleeves and machine the cylinders back to the required geometry.

Dyno Run-In, Oil Change and Dyno Tuning

We complete the initial engine run-in on our Mainline ProHub dyno under controlled load.

We monitor the engine during bedding-in, replace the run-in oil and filter, then complete the final custom dyno calibration.

The vehicle is then ready to drive without you needing to perform the initial run-in procedure yourself.

L76 and L77 Valley Plate

Precision LS Engine Machining

Critical LS engine machining is completed in our Penrith workshop. This allows us to measure the engine first, determine exactly what machining is required, and control the clearances throughout the rebuild.

Our Comec CNC equipment allows accurate machining of LS engine blocks and components in-house rather than sending critical machining work elsewhere.

Precision Bore Measuring and Honing

Cylinder bores are measured throughout the machining process so the final bore size and piston clearance can be matched to the engine combination. Final cylinder preparation is completed using our Sunnen honing equipment.

Measure first. Machine what the engine actually needs.

Bore condition, wear, previous damage and core shift determine whether an LS block needs honing, boring or sleeving. We inspect and measure the block before making that decision.

Paul’s VF Clubsport R8 — Dropped Valve Seat to 382rwkw

Paul’s VF Clubsport R8 came to Oztrack after its LS3 suffered a dropped valve seat. Once we stripped and measured the engine, we found further problems that meant this wasn’t going to be a simple cylinder-head repair.

Why Paul’s LS3 Needed Rebuilding

The LS3 originally came in with a dropped valve seat. The damaged cylinder heads required replacement, so we fitted heads with new ductile-iron intake valve seats to address the known factory intake-seat issue.

Once we stripped and accurately measured the LS3 block, we found significant core shift. The cylinders could not safely be bored even 0.010 inch oversize.

Rather than remove material from an already thin section of cylinder wall, the block was sleeved before being machined and rebuilt.

We also discovered damage to one of the lifter bores. That lifter bore was sleeved as part of the repair before final engine assembly.

The finished combination produced 381.6rwkW and 607.8Nm. More importantly, the dropped valve seat, cylinder-wall core shift and damaged lifter bore were all addressed properly during the rebuild rather than simply replacing the originally failed components.

How the LS Engine Rebuild Works

1. Inspection

We inspect the engine and identify the likely cause of failure before the rebuild begins.

2. Strip and Measure

The engine is stripped and the block, crankshaft, bores, pistons and cylinder heads are measured.

3. Machining

Required machining is completed in-house, including CNC boring, block surfacing, honing, sleeving and cylinder-head work where required.

4. Engine Assembly

The engine is assembled using the required replacement parts and selected performance upgrades.

5. Installation

For complete vehicle jobs, the rebuilt engine is installed back into the vehicle.

6. Calibration and Run-In

We complete the ECU calibration and, when selected, the ProHub dyno run-in, oil change and final dyno tune.

Yes. The performance cam and dual valve-spring upgrade is $650.

How long does a standard rebuild take?

Most standard engine-only rebuilds are completed in about three weeks once the engine is at the workshop. Complete vehicle bookings can take longer depending on workshop availability.
