LS1, LS2 and LS3 Engine Problems: Symptoms, Causes and Repair Options
A new tapping noise, low oil pressure, misfire or metal in the oil can turn into major LS engine damage. Learn what the symptoms may mean and when to stop driving.
Stop driving if the engine suddenly develops a serious noise or warning
Continuing to run a damaged LS engine can spread metal through the oil system or turn a cylinder-head repair into a complete rebuild. Shut the engine down and arrange diagnosis when you notice any of these signs:
- New tapping, ticking, squeaking or knocking
- Low oil-pressure warning or falling oil pressure
- A sudden misfire or major loss of power
- Metal particles found in the oil or filter
- Overheating followed by noise or rough running
- An engine that has seized or will no longer turn
What could your LS engine symptom mean?
A symptom does not confirm the failed part. Proper testing, oil inspection and mechanical measurement are needed before ordering parts or deciding on a rebuild.

Problems we inspect in LS engines
Lifter and cam-lobe failure
A failing lifter roller can mark or destroy a cam lobe. Metal can then circulate through the bearings and oil pump. A tapping or squeaking noise should be investigated early.
Dropped or moving valve seats
Valve-seat movement in rectangular-port heads can lead to a valve contacting the piston. Heat cycles and overheating may increase the risk. It is best to replace the heads with ones that have had new valve seats fitted.
Low oil pressure and bearing wear
Low pressure can come from bearing clearances, the pump, pickup seal, oil aeration or internal wear. Replacing the oil pump alone will not repair excessive bearing clearance.
Broken or weak valve springs
A weak spring can lose control at higher rpm. A broken spring may cause a misfire, bent valve or more serious piston contact. Modified engines need springs suited to the camshaft and rpm range.
Core shift and cylinder-wall damage
Factory aluminium blocks can have cylinder-wall thickness variation. Measurement helps determine whether the block is suitable for machining or whether sleeves should be considered. This is common on LS3 and LSA blocks.
Overheating and detonation damage
Severe heat can affect head gaskets, valve seats, pistons, bores and bearings. Detonation can damage ring lands and pistons. The cause must be corrected as part of the repair.
Timing-chain tensioner damage
Some VE–VF tensioners can break and leave debris inside the engine. The chain, tensioner, oil pump and surrounding parts should be inspected when the front of the engine is opened.
Rocker trunnion wear
Wear or excessive movement in the factory rocker bearings can affect valvetrain control. Oztrack can inspect the rockers and recommend replacement or a suitable bush conversion.

Failed LS hydraulic roller lifter
A damaged lifter roller can destroy a cam lobe and send metal through the engine. New tapping or squeaking should be investigated before the engine is driven further. Sometimes lifters balloon and cannot be removed from their bores. Then the only way to rectify is an engine rebuild. Minimal driving is essential to minimize damage.
We use new LS7 lifters and LS7 lifter trays in most street-engine builds.. With race engines we sometimes use Johnson, they are better for very high rpm but don’t add extra reliability for street use.

How LS3 & LSA block core shift creates a thin cylinder wall
Core shift can leave one side of a factory cylinder liner much thinner than the other. The thin area is more likely to crack, especially under high load, boost or overheating. It may also leave too little wall thickness of the cylinders to be safely bored out far enough to remove wear, scoring or damage. When the bore cannot be cleaned up while maintaining safe wall thickness, the factory liners must be removed and the block fitted with new sleeves. This is a common concern with LS3 and LSA aluminium blocks.

Dropped valve-seat damage can escalate quickly
A valve seat that moves out of position can hold a valve open. The piston may then strike the valve, damaging the cylinder head, piston and sometimes the block.
During an LS rebuild, Oztrack can inspect the cylinder heads and discuss machined exchange heads with replacement intake valve seats where suitable.

LS1, LS2, L76, L77, L98 and LS3 problems are not identical
The correct diagnosis depends on the engine family, cylinder heads, displacement, AFM hardware, modifications, service history and how the vehicle is used.
LS1 and LS2
Age, kilometres, oil pressure, lifters, valve springs, ring seal and previous modifications often shape the repair plan. Cathedral-port cylinder heads and early Gen III hardware require the correct matching parts.
L76, L77 and L98
These six-litre engines can have different AFM/DOD equipment and cylinder-head combinations. Diagnosis should identify the exact engine and existing hardware before parts are selected.
LS3 and LSA
Rectangular-port heads, valve-seat condition, cylinder-wall thickness and the demands of boosted or high-power use deserve close attention during an engine build.

Questions customers ask us
Should I drive an LS engine that has started tapping?
A new tap should be checked before the vehicle is driven hard or for a long distance. If the noise is loud, is joined by a squeak, low oil pressure, a misfire or metal in the oil, shut the engine down and arrange diagnosis.
Does a tapping LS engine always have a failed lifter?
No. Rockers, pushrods, valve springs, exhaust leaks, oil-supply problems, flexplate bolts and other faults can produce similar noises. Diagnosis should confirm the cause before parts are ordered.
Can a damaged LS3 engine be rebuilt?
Many can. The block, crankshaft, bores and cylinder heads must be inspected and measured. Sleeves or replacement parts may make a damaged engine repairable, depending on the failure. A correctly sleeved block can provide more consistent cylinder-wall thickness and support higher-power engine combinations. We often see sleeved engines making the best power.
Can Oztrack address LS3 valve-seat concerns during a rebuild?
Oztrack can inspect the heads and discuss machined exchange heads with replacement ductile iron intake valve seats for suitable builds.
Can low oil pressure be fixed by replacing the oil pump?
Not always. Bearing clearance, pickup sealing, oil aeration and internal leakage can also reduce oil pressure. The cause needs to be measured rather than assumed.
Can I send an LS engine to Oztrack from interstate?
Yes. Customers and workshops can send a removed LS engine to Oztrack in Penrith. Freight, timing and the build specification are discussed before the job proceeds.
Is a crate engine the only option after an LS3 failure?
No. Depending on the damage, Oztrack may be able to repair your engine, rebuild it or supply a made-to-order reconditioned engine. Compare the options before buying a crate engine. A made-to-order rebuild can address known block and cylinder-head concerns while being specified for the vehicle, power target and intended use.
