VF Commodore Buyer’s Guide (June 2013-October 2017)

If you’re considering purchasing a VF Commodore or HSV V8, this comprehensive guide is here to help.

We will look at the different VF models. This includes their engines, common problems, upgrades, and tips for making a good choice.

Overview of VF Commodore V8 Models (2013-2017)

The VF Commodore was a good improvement on the VE. The most noticeable change when driving is the electric steering. The first Supercharged V8 was in the VF Series I GTS and many VF Series II HSV models.

VF V8 Engines: Variations and Performance

  • L77 Engine: Found in early VE models, the L77 is a 6.0L engine with advanced rectangular port heads (L92 design). It has better airflow than older models and cylinder deactivation technology. The AFM feature was only activated in Automatic models.
  • LS3 Engine: The VF HSV Clubsport and Maloo Series I and then in the Series II VF all models featured the LS3 engine.

Common Problems with VF Commodores

Engine Issues

  1. Lifter Problems: Premature failure of hydraulic lifters can damage the camshaft. Replacing lifters early is crucial to avoid costly engine repairs.
  2. Cam Bearing Wear: Cam bearings can gradually wear out over time. This may require a complete engine rebuild.
  3. Rocker Trunion Wear: Lateral slop in rocker trunnions can damage valve springs and rocker’s arms.
  4. Oil Pump Failures: Oil pump pressure relief valve problems can cause low oil pressure, which can lead to severe engine damage. The LS3 has lower oil pressure than the L77, which has a higher pressure/volume pump.
  5. Fuel Injector failures – easily identified and fixed.
  6. Core Shift Issues in LS3 and LSA blocks – these can prevent oversized boring and require fresh sleeves to be installed. Sometimes, the thin side of the factory sleeve can crack. The L77 doesn’t have this problem

Clutch and Transmission Problems

  • Clutch Failures: VF models have a nice clutch new with a dual-mass flywheel, but as they age, the dual-mass flywheel deteriorates.
  • 6L80E Transmission Issues: The VF automatic seems to be the best of the 6L80e. However, some present troubles. Reconditioned 6L80e prices have increased significantly since 2020, but they are a good, strong gearbox to retain.
  • Torque Converter Problems: Worn lockup clutches can cause problems in the gearbox and need to be replaced early. We import an excellent 6L80e Torque Converter.

Upgrades for VF Commodores

Performance Exhaust Systems

A performance exhaust system is one of the most impactful upgrades for VF V8s:

  • Headers and Catalytic Converters: Replacing restrictive stock parts improves airflow, unlocking additional power. Cats are the most restrictive item, and in cars with high kilometres, they will spoil the performance.
  • Power Gains: A full-performance exhaust system can increase power by more than 25 kW on standard engines. If you add a cold air intake and tuning, this can increase the gains by up to 60 kW.

OTR Cold Air Intakes

Over-the-radiator (OTR) cold air intakes significantly improve airflow and are a must-have for performance enthusiasts. Popular options include:

Camshaft Upgrades

Upgrading the camshaft enhances engine performance:

  • Cam Upgrades: Cam upgrades can boost performance. An L77 with a performance exhaust and OTR can go from 270 rwkw to 335 rwkw. An LS3 can increase from 300 rwkw to 350 rwkw. The actual number depending on cylinder ring seal and the cam chosen.
  • AFM Delete Kits: For L77 engines, the AFM hardware needs to be replaced to accommodate high-performance cams. Some people call this Displacement on Demand (DOD).
  • Oztrack offers Cam Upgrades with Dyno Tuning
  • Oztrack also posts ls cam kits across Australia and can remotely tune the engine

Dyno Tuning

A custom dyno tune optimizes your engine’s performance based on modifications. Expect significant power gains:

The VF V6 is a very underrated model.

They drive very nicely and the LFX is smooth in power delivery. We often fit a cold air intake OTR and Dyno tune to make near 200 rwkw. If you want a V8 model, just buy the V8 model. Don’t plan to swap the V6 for the V8 later. It will cost you more and will not be as refined.

Oztrack offers tuning and intakes for VF V6 models.

Buying Tips for VF Commodores

What to Look For

  • Condition: Inspect for engine wear, transmission behaviour, and signs of poor maintenance.
  • Service History: Ensure regular oil changes and proper servicing.
  • Upgrades: Verify the quality of any aftermarket modifications.

Recommended Models

  1. VF HSV LS3 Series 1: Combines powerful performance with advanced features. They might be found for a reasonable price.
  2. VF Series II LS3: These are the best non-HSV Holden ever built. Series 2 VF SSV is the choice.
  3. LSA models: These are all collector’s items if you find one with a damaged motor for a good price. We can help recondition it, and you’ll end up with a great car.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls

Maintenance and Reliability Tips

Regular Maintenance

  • Change oil frequently to reduce wear on lifters and bearings.
  • Use high-quality fluids for both the engine and transmission.
  • Replace wear-prone parts like lifters and rocker trunnions proactively.

Cost of Repairs

  • Clutch Replacement:~$3000 approx
  • Transmission Rebuild: ~$6,000+ for 6L80E.
  • Engine Rebuild: Starting at $11350 for cam bearing and lifter damage. Includes engine in and out, dyno run-in and dyno tune.
